Food : My favourites...

Sibu is well known for food only... or maybe timber tycoons???

Anyway, I am no timber tycoon son... :-S

Here are my favourite Sibu food...they are not well-known amongst West Malaysians



Siput...I don't know what's the specific name. LOL...but in Foochow it's called 'ahm mo loi'. Not ammo but i think can be used to lastik birdies..hehe..



Cooked with Chinese wine and ginger...yummy!!! 'Ahm mo loi' breeds in fresh water ponds and rivers. Costs RM 4-6 for one can (condensed milk can).


My grandma's version is the best...

How to obtain the flesh?
Use toothpicks..







That red piece of protective keratin cover is not edible. The downside of eating this is some of the snails contains a little sand/mud inside...must wash properly with salt water.



Next is kupang...darn cheap. RM 2 for 1kg. Often sold by Orang Asli ladies at wet markets. They are absurdly huge. Huge pieces need to be halved to ensure no one chokes to death. :-). It is cooked with onions, ginger, chilli padi and Chinese wine. Very chewy and addictive!!!


Sarawak Laksa...I had this at a random restaurant before flying back to KLIA. The belacan chilli plus limau kasturi sauce need to be well mixed before pouring it into the bowl. I kept finding for juicy prawns but to no avail. They substituted the prawns with small slices of pork!!!

FAIL!!!!



Taste wise, the broth is not so strong, not much santan added...i finished the soup also.



The best Sarawak Laksa in Sibu is the stall on first floor of Sibu Market.



This is something to shout about!!! I love this! Chao Chu Mien (stir fried and then cooked in soup). Blogged about this ages ago...Back to Sibu...

Fallen leaves...

Sometimes, fallen leaves tell a lot of stories that you can relate to your life...

Old leaves are...

1) ...dumped after serving the tree for some time. It doesn't matter if you contributed the most.

2) ...stepped by humans and animals.

3) ...alone and waiting for bacteria and detritivores like earthworms to feast on them.

4) ...lifeless.

5) ...hopeless.

6) ...not loved.

7) ...feeling lost. Sometimes blown by wind, other times used to wipe asses of jungle trekkers who decided to poo between bushes.

8) ...not beautiful.

9) ...a mess/burden to the community.

10) ...dead.


If you are an 'old leaf', please always remember that many other 'leaves' are like you...if they can face hardship, why not you?

Besides, we always have a family whom we can seek comfort no matter what happened...

Middle finger at Min Kee food court

It was a bright and joyful Sunday.

I was fetching my dearest brother, Wallance Gan, back to his house after studying in my house for 3days 2nights. Gotta rush back before 11am because he got tuition.

On the way back, we stop by Min Kee for our breakfast...ordered Pork Chop Hot Plate Pan Mee...but didn't take photos...quite tasty and cheap...RM4.50 topped with 3 pieces of pork chop, an egg and slices of cabbage.

anyway, that's not the point! after placing the order, Gan went to toilet. And i was sitting quietly and act cool...

Although the food court is crowded, i suddenly noticed that a few eyes were looking at my bro from head to toe...then from toe to head...and a teenage bitch was moving her lips along the line...' hou tai chek'(big sized)...and etc etc...telling that to her equally bitchy old mother.

And i was thinking that maybe Gan knew them. So, i waited for him to return from his rather long pee-pee.

Of course when Gan was modelling back to his seat, the whole family across my table stared and talked about him again...

Gan denied that he knew them...

Then, i straight away showed this to that teenage flat chested ugly girl...



I literally stuff her mouth with Dettol soap...she kept quiet the whole time.


Like this but at least this random guy(rockin' rob) on flickr is not a disgrace to the world.

On the other hand, the pork chop on my hot plate is more pretty (and more quiet) than her....

p/s: I think she should thank me because this time when she talked bad about someone else, she just got a middle finger. Next time maybe she will get spanked hard by the subject of her badmouthing.

3. Dabai (Canarium odontophyllum miq)

Expensive...1kg for RM 22-30

This seasonal fruit, resembling olives and only available during year end, is fast gaining popularity in China and South Korea. Dabai is also proven to be an antioxidant.

Ohhh la la...this photo is great...

It tastes a little similar to avocado but more creamy and a bit sour.

Cooked dabai waiting anxiously to enter my mouth...

Dabai must be soaked in warm water for 10-15 minutes to soften the fruit and it is best eaten with soy sauce and sugar. The relatively huge seed in the centre can be pried open to reveal the edible kernel which tastes like peanuts.

The seed can be goreng'ed and then the inner kernel is tasty, like peanuts.

Recommendation : Dabai is sold at markets during year end.

4. Diang Miang Ngu (Diang-Wok, Miang-Side, Ngu-Porridge)

OMG...stop drumming stupid stomach!!!!

A savoury soup consists of grinded rice flour, cuttle fish, black fungus and fish balls, Diang Miang Ngu certainly whets everyone’s appetite. The name Diang Miang Ngu indicates the unique way this dish is cooked. First, grinded rice flour solution is poured from the sides of a heated wok. It will then solidify. Next, the cooked rice flour is scraped off the wok before fish broth is added followed by other ingredients. Add the famous Sarawak pepper to your liking and this soup is ready to give you the ‘oomph’!

Recommendation : Chop Hing Huong coffee shop, in an alleyway by Jalan Blacksmith.

5. Midin (edible wild fern)

The spirally frond...

Midin is a very nutritious fern. It is not only rich in iron (prevents anemia) but also contains Vitamin A (good for eyesight) and high levels of fibre (prevents constipation). Only the soft tips of this fern can be eaten. Midin is usually served in four ways –raw (as ulam), with garlic, belacan or the Foochow style (ginger and red wine). This spirally fern is crunchy even after cooked. Definitely not to be missed!

Recommendation : Midin can be bought at markets. Most restaurants serve midin with various ways of cooking.

So, the next time when you are in Sibu, do not just hunt for typical Malaysian food like nasi lemak, roti canai, char koay teow and et cetera.

Head on to the streets and get a real taste of Sibu!

okok...i am about to post a rejected article written by me. It was sent to The Star and NST but the article failed to see the daylight, sort of.

Alright...no more craps...I am dividing this article into two parts...

PART 1

Sibu is a bustling town located in the center of the Land of Hornbills. With a population of over 255 000 mostly consists of Chinese Foochows, Melanau, Malay and Iban, it surely contributes to the variety of Malaysian cuisine. Sibu offers an amazing array of tasty, cheap and one of a kind food. They are nothing like the ones in West Malaysia or anything around the world.

Below are the five must-haves when you are in Sibu the next time. Do not leave Sibu until you have tasted them!

1. Kampua Mee (meaning: noodles on dry plate)

This economical dish is so tasty that Sibu folks who stay out of this town never fail to tapao a few packets every time they are about to leave Sibu.

Just look at it! Don't you just want to shove it up your mouth?

It is a simple dish prepared by tossing boiled noodles in lard and a dash of soy sauce, garnished with spring onions, fried shallots and slices of roasted pork (char siew). Despite looking insipid, it has all the flavours that make you cringe for more!

Add the chilli sauce and then you can knock on heaven's door...

By the way, it tastes totally different from the Wantan Mee in West Malaysia!

Recommendation : Siong Kee Mee Kampua, Stall 41, Taman Selera Muhibbah Hawker Centre.

2. Konpia (Foochow ‘bagel’)

It looks so unappetizing, I know.

Konpia was created by the Foochows in China during World War II as a dry and long-lasting food, essential during war times. It is made of flour topped with sesame seeds and then baked in oven (naan-baking style).

Konpia can be served with or without meat and broth. Nevertheless, Konpia with broth (usually pork based) is more preferable as the ‘bagel’ will be richer in taste.

In addition, the broth makes the bottom part softer while the upper part retains its original chewy state. It goes well with chilli sauce.

Recommendation : Mr. and Mrs. Yeo’s Stall, Lorong Tiong Hua 26.
(My papa used to eat here during his primary school days!!! Imagine how old is this stall!)
